What is Eventing?
Eventing is an Equestrian event which comprises dressage, cross-country and show jumping.
Dressage
Dressage comprises an exact sequence of movements ridden in an enclosed arena in a graceful, relaxed, and precise manner. Riders and their horse are judged on balance, rhythm and suppleness, obedience of the horse, and its harmony with the rider.
Cross-Country
While tackling a cross-country course, both horse and rider need to trust each other and require a high level of fitness. The course comprises 12-20 lower level fixed jumps and 30-40 higher levels throughout a long outdoor course. The course is a combination of solid fences, with various obstacles such as water, ditches, drops and banks. Many jumps allow part or all of the jump to collapse if hit with enough impact.
Show Jumping
The technical jumping skills of the horse and rider, including suppleness, obedience, fitness and athleticism are tested in Show Jumping. 12-20 brightly coloured fences are set up in an arena and can be knocked down, unlike solid cross-country obstacles. In addition to normal jumping skills, Show Jumping tests the fitness and stamina of the horse and rider.
